Algebra factoring question Empty Re: Algebra factoring question

Post by Doc Thu Jan 22, 2009 11:54 pm

You're looking for the product so you're multiplying both terms here ...

the top numerator for the left factors out to be:

    (x+1)(x-1)
    -----------
    (x+1)

And the one on the right is:

    (x+3)
    -----
    3( x-1)

So you would cancel out (x-1) and (x+1) since they both appear twice and be left with:

    (x+3)
    ------
    3

as you're final answer, in other words, option 4 ...

Why would you cancel out (x-1) and (x+1)?

Don't they need to be equal to cancel out?

I mean you cancel out (x-1) with the other (x-1) and (x+1) with the other (x+1) ... (x+1) appears in the both the denominator and numerator for the first term and (x-1) is found in the denominator of the term on the right and the numerator of the left term ...

-_____-, I am sick of school...first its 3 days of finals, now it's a day of regents...

Well you are from Philly...so you won't understand. In NY they have important tests called Regents...

My school is one of te few schools where you can get a Regents diploma (besides the normal one)

I should pass the mastery grade (85) on the regents to beconsidered good in terms of taking the Regents Diploma..

I don't know what happened to me on the day of the math rgeents (last year) but I got an 84 Sad

So they are offering me the chance to re-take the Algerba regents so I try to get higher than an 85 (or an 85).

In terms of colleges...it won't affect me...
