Well, I only have two more years of school left (second year starts in 18 days), and I feel like I'm running out of time to decide where I should go in my life. There are so many things I'd like to be, and it's hard to narrow them down. I've dropped two careers so far, but I can't really decide on the others, so I'd like some insight and wisdom from NH's senior citizens... Please, don't tell me to choose what I'll enjoy, because I think I'd enjoy every one of these...
My choices so far and the pros and cons:
- Aerospace Engineer
Pros:
I get paid plenty, assuming I get a job at NASA/Raytheon/Boeing/Lockheed etc.
It sounds very interesting, as I could personally design things for aircraft.
If I major in Aero, I'll also major in Mechanical Engineering, as they're taught side-by-side in most colleges. I can kill two birds with one stone.
I constantly work with state-of-the-art technology in my later years.
I'll get to play with LAZARS!
Near certain employment (as of now, I don't know about the future)
Cons:
Extremely difficult, hence the pay grade.
I'll have to do a TON of math. I'm already behind on math courses for Aero.
- Career Soldier
Pros:
I'll consistently work in the field.
I'll get to visit foreign places around the world.
I'll be able to handle weapons on a daily basis.
I get more respect.
There will be plenty of adrenaline moments (love that stuff)
Cons:
I could get stuck at a desk job. (That's what rules out most careers for me.)
I could die, obviously.
The pay is suckish.
Many soldiers end service with mental issues.
- Stuntcar Driver (Might drop this one)
Pros:
I enjoy driving (usually).
Provides adrenaline moments.
I might get to be in movies.
Very good pay grade.
Cons:
I'll get broken bones frequently.
Possibility of death or lifelong paralysis (might as well be dead).
My life might go nowhere.
- Commercial Pilot
Pros:
Satisfying pay grade.
I'll get to travel all around the world.
... I'll fly.
Cons:
Extremely repetitive.
No field work. I'll be trapped in a cockpit my whole life.
Won't really make any friends. Pilots and copilots are constantly split up.
If the plane crashes, people die, but the pilot survives, the pilot always takes the blame, whether it's legitimate or not. I've read about a pilot committing suicide because of this, because people wouldn't stop sending him hate letters and blaming a crash on him.
Could someone help me decide which career to pursue? Also, if you have any suggestions about careers I may like, I'm all ears...

Re: My Choice of Careers
Lol, does anyone even read these?
We do, we just chose not to reply. Go team forum ninja!
We do.
Stuntcar driver ftw
Stuntcar driver ftw
I'd say pilot.
You could die as a soldier and not be well off.
You have high hopes that will most likely not result for Aero.
And stuntcar driver is questionable really.

Being a pilot would get extremely old after a while though... and it's not very impressive to be one.
If you're that kind of person, it might get old. Everything gets old if you don't love it. That's why you ultimately choose, and that's why you have a choice of more than one career.
go for aerospace engineer man, good luck!!
Aerospace Engineer
but expect no life man ... literally
when I say its HARD i mean it is HARD

Perhaps you should tell us your interests in life Ace, then we won't tell you random answers, but a more personalized one.
Long post is long.
I guess I'll try for Aero first... if it's too hard, I might switch to commercial pilot...
I just looked up this stuff, and apparently pilots don't get a "Satisfying" salary like I said above... Presuming the site I looked at is accurate.
American Airlines: 1st yr F/O: $31,080 and 10th yr Captain $123,420
Delta Airlines: 1st yr F/O: $50,400 and 10th yr Captain $204,636
UPS: 1st yr F/O: $26,004 and 10th yr Captain $200,508
Southwest: 1st yr F/O: $42,960 and 10th yr Captain $159,000
ATA: 1st yr F/O: $36,000 and 10th yr Captain $136,632
Airborne Express: 1st yr F/O $28,536 and 10th yr Captain $146,184
The beginning years are suckish... but the tenth year is great. But if I get an Aero job, I'll automatically start with at least a $55,000 dollar salary no matter who employs me. Most Aeros get paid ~$75k, while the top ten percent get paid about 122k. Getting 200k just to fly a plane around sounds more than great, but it'll take ages to get there...
I hate decisions.
@Ahmed I love the feeling of adrenaline... that's the main reason I'm considering soldier / stunt car driver, because I won't get it in Aero or being a pilot. I enjoy making real important decisions, like what a soldier would do, instead of worrying about how many windows to put on an airplane. I like doing different things every day, and I would hate to be stuck at a desk all my life, which sort of kills Aero. I have an unexplainable liking of aircraft, aeronautics, and mechanics and that sort of thing. I also enjoy being outside, and any aircraft-related job is certainly not outside. Some of these things contradict each other... so this probably doesn't help very much.

Soldiers get commanded. They don't do any major decisions.
If I go to college, I'm automatically bumped up to an officer rank. They get to make some decisions.
@Asya Wtfno.
@Asya Wtfno.
Decision making is mainly the General's job.
You'll make minor decisions.
You'll make minor decisions.
I'll be able to decide who cleans the latrines. Good enough.
As for ardenaline...you like putting chemicals in your body?
No, and hopefully I never will.
So what do you like then?
taxi driver?
Mostly planes and stuff... flying is pretty cool IMO... and most engineering careers, like mechanical and electrical stuff. I would also consider becoming a meteorologist, since that stuff sounds very interesting to me, but my brother's pursuing that career and I don't want to look unoriginal.
I would have to deal with lots of morons if I was a taxi driver...

dude, just become an aircraft engineer, u don't need high grades for it either
