Post by Ahmed Sun Nov 07, 2010 1:01 pm

I was browsing through the FISK Guide to colleges, and by coincidence they were comparing Columbia with Yale.

    This is what it says:

Columbia may soon leave Yale in the dust as the third most selective university in the Ivy League. Applications have doubled in the past 10 years for one simple reason: Manhattan trumps New Haven, Providence, Ithaca, and every other Ivy League city, with the possible exception of Boston. The heart of Columbia is still the core. Though students entering Columbia will, of course, expect the rigorous academic program they’ll encounter at this Ivy League school, there’s no room here in the heart of Manhattan for the bookish nerd. Students must be streetwise, urbane, and together enough to handle one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Columbia lets its students experience life in the Big Apple, but serves as a refuge when it becomes necessary to escape from New York; ideally, Columbians can easily be part of the “real world” while simultaneously immersing themselves in the best academia has to offer. “I am challenged and pushed every day and I love it,” says one student. “I get to enjoy an amazing city and the company of tremendously fascinating and different people.”

Because anyone can get into an easy school. Lol

Finally, some people like to challenge themselves. Nothing bad about that.

@Sayf: ya the end is that for undergrad I graduated from an elite school and someone else didn't

@flame: ok, but that's not relevant to anything at all. I'm not trying to influence you to apply or not apply to Yale, thats your choice. My point though is that Yale is not godly like you may think it is.

Sayf: Nah, I won't be an engineer. Last I checked, Yale had one major for Computer Science and Psychology together and i love both topics and for likely than not, I'll be in one of those, so I think one major instead of a double major would be nice.

If you compare selectivity by acceptance rates then Columbia is like Princeton:

    http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-universities-rankings

When I was speaking of selectivity however I was referring to the number of applicants that apply to every Uni.

And guess what I just read that Columbia College's acceptance rate is 7% which makes it equal to Yale's. Its the Columbia's engineering school that has an acceptance rate of 13% and therefore pushes the acceptance rate up a bit. I applied to Columbia College.
