Our first AAR:
It’s the year of our Lord 1771; the world is in constant turmoil. Empires rise and fall, leaders are born and others die. In the Middle East once a powerful Empire is now ruled by a weak Sultan, the Ottoman Empire. Ever since the Middle Ages the Ottoman Turks have gained power in the Middle East until they reached their peak in the sixteenth century when they ruled all of North Africa, Asia Minor and parts of Southern Europe. But now the Ottomans are on the brink of defeat, with Russians battling on one front and the Austrians on the other Europe has become quite troubling to the Ottomans. In the east the Persian Empire is restless and anxious to take back Mesopotamia from the Ottoman Turks.
Egypt was once ruled by mighty warriors known as the Mamelukes; fierce warriors brought from the steppes and trained to become the mightiest of warriors and leaders. However due to internal struggles between different factions in Egypt the Mameluke state fell into chaos and war. The Ottoman Empire crushed the Mameluke state and destroyed the power of the Emirs in Egypt. However it was the will of Allah that in 1771 the Mameluke state rises again with a great leader on its head, Ali bey El Kebir. He would lead a war of independence against the Ottoman Sultan and will attempt to restore the Mameluke state back to its greatness. Will Ali bey be successful and forge a kingdom larger than any Egyptian ruler have ever established or will he be executed as a traitor to the high Porte?.
The War of Independence:
Under the leadership of Ali bey, Egyptian forces managed to capture Palestine and Damascus. The Ottoman Empire decided to attack the Egyptian forces in Syria and defeat the rebellious army however victory was the ally of the Egyptians. The Ottoman forces have gone weary of fighting the Egyptians and have retreated back to Anatolia to regroup and prepare their counterattack. Ali bey was preparing for the defensive when he received news that the Ottoman forces in Iraq have gone north to stop the Russian advance and that a medium sized garrison remains in the region. Ali bey quickly gathers all of his forces and marches towards Mesopotamia.
Expansion of the Mameluke state:
Battle takes place, the Egyptian forces are less equipped and trained as opposed to the highly disciplined Ottoman Janissary troops. However the cunning general manages to heroically win the battle and takes Mesopotamia. The Ottoman Sultan growing uneasy with the rebellion sends his finest general Abdulaziz Yahudi to lead two fully equipped armies of Janissary troops against Ali bey’s troops.
Ali bey recruits more troops and prepares for a major battle at Mesopotamia and finally the battles begin. Forces clash and Ottoman troops march with great confidence towards the less skilled Egyptian forces, the battle is fierce but Egyptian forces held line and fought hard against the Ottomans. The battle went on and on with more casualties piling up on both sides until the Ottoman general fell in battle, the Ottoman army realized defeat and started mass routing. The Egyptian forces managed to achieve a close victory.
Fighting back:
After the Ottoman defeat in Mesopotamia, Ali bey realized that he had Armenia and Anatolia lying ahead of him with little resistance so he marched with all of his troops towards Armenia. In Syria, a new general was appointed to lead the second Egyptian army to capture Anatolia. The Ottoman headquartes realized that the Egyptian threat was far more serious than was anticipated, the Ottoman minister of warfare decided to withdraw all forces from the Russian fronts and move them to Armenia, Anatolia and Istanbul.
Ali bey was marching towards Armenia where he was surprised to find a large garrison composed of Tatar troops along with Ottoman forces. Ali bey decided that an assault of Armenia would be suicidal so he decided to siege the city until its forces surrender. Meanwhile in Anatolia the Second Egyptian army was carving a bloody path towards the city, thousands of Janissary troops faced the might Egyptian army but none were a match to their strength and in the end Anatolia falls. The capture of Anatolia made it possible for Ali bey’s forces to capture Armenia now that the Ottoman reinforcements are cut off the siege will be more effective. However the Ottoman forces decided to break the siege and in that attempt were slaughtered to the last man leaving Armenia unprotected. Finally Armenia falls and the Egyptian Mameluke state is on the foot steps to defeat the Ottoman Sultan.
