The Muslims were having internal conflicts at the time and didn't expect such a force to arrive at their doorstep of Jerusalem ... the Turks probably thought that Peter's civilian forces were it when the real armies were still to come ... and the city of Jerusalem itself was only guarded by its local garrison, unsuspecting of the massacre that was about to take place
They still managed to hold Jerusalem for nearly a century as well as hold on to some other territories ... but the Muslims rebounded by becoming the first army to defeat the Mongols in battle and then turn to finish off the remaining crusaders, but the Mongols simply steamrolled through Russia and Eastern Europe ... they only met defeat at the hands of the Muslims in Egypt and India ...
