The Muslim nations in this time period were more advanced, but the fact that the crusaders were able to hold onto this area in the heart of Islam for so long so far away from home is no joke.

Now I don't know about the German states stopping the mongols but I do know that the Polish stopped the Ottoman's in the siege of Vienna
