It's a portfolio design. It's incomplete for the purpose of flexibility when it comes to actually coding it.

Not really, it's 640 x 480 pixels.

Yeah, that's still really small. You're supposed to be showcasing your work, and your portfolio page should be an example of that. I'd suggest you make it a larger area for your content, so that whoever goes on can see that they're meant to look at the work, not the website.

Have you considered going lighter? Like white's, subtle greys, a little bit of grain? You could still keep that shadow in. Dark designs can be somewhat intimidating, especially if the person is unfamiliar with your style.

It really isn't small. The average screen resolution has maybe 1024 x 768.

Taking up around half of that for a design is just perfect. And plus most of my work probably won't even take 640 x 480 because I don't usually work in that range, I either work on smaller things, 450 x 200, or around 1400 x 1200, around that.

So no matter how much larger it is, it's a waste. It all depends on the javascript image viewer I use.
