    WASHINGTON (AFP) – A US judge has ordered a ban on growing genetically modified beets in the United States until the Department of Agriculture fully investigates their environmental impact.

    Judge Jeffrey White of the federal court in San Francisco, California, made the ruling on Friday. It bars new cultivation of the genetically modified beets, which represent 90 percent of the US crop.

    Beets are the source of half of US sugar production; the rest is from sugar cane.

    Experts think the evaluation that was requested will take more than two years. Some fear that could lead to shortages, and growers warn there may not be enough of the traditional unmodified seed.

    The judge ruled at the request of activists, including the Center for Food Safety, and the Sierra Club, which oppose genetically modified crops.

    The US sugar beet crop was worth 1.33 billion dollars in 2007-2008.

    something other than religion for a change, what is your position on genetically engendered crops and the judges ruling?

    If we been eating these crops for a long time and there are no side effects, then no change should be made.

    No thanks. I like things natural. Girls for example are maturing as early as age 8 because of all this modifying stuff. Why change what God created?

    So you rather see a discombobulated human race at the expense of feeding people? This is besides the fact that people still die in Africa from hunger even with all this modifying stuff.

    worth 1.33 billion dollars and 90% of the USA's sugar production. Anything with sugar in it is going to skyrocket in price.

    GM does have the slight ability to activate genes we dont activating, but in the end the gains out way the risk. This relativity new tech can quickly raise to almost 100% accuracy if nurtured correctly and is the worlds only hope for fixing up after what we did.

    Silence GM is jump starting evolution, it's no different from lets say cross breeding plants threw 2000 species in order to get a desired result. this also allows humans a huge springboard for genetic engineering on other serious issues, could you imagine a world where humans are 20x stronger 20x smarter and immune to illness?
