Unite the world under a world government and focus all resources on military, since that's where most of the civilian tech we use comes from. Then, focus on colonizing space.

Keeping the peace (putting down terrorists), strengthening quarantines or helping with evacuations if necessary, and maybe even the discovery of hostile extraterrestrials.
