im not talking about having a girl friend, there is a difference between that and having a friend.
but being nice to people implies you dont know them much, or your only giving this politeness, friendship is a mutually beneficial relationship where 2 or more people enjoy the company of each other.
girl/boy friends are more than that still, yes its a mutually beneficial relationship still (you hope so anyway) but theres also high levels of intimacy and love.
you can have friends without loving them like that, think of your boy friends ahmed.

From what I have been reading, from what parents have been telling me, and from what has been confirmed in discussions with many young Muslim brothers and sisters from countries all across the world it has become clear that more and more young Muslims are not following the guidelines for relationships between boys and girls so clearly set out in Islam. What Islam says is right is easy to remember because we are told that before marriage there is to be virtually no contact at all between males and females. In today’s world, while still a minority, an increasing number of young Muslims are having relationships with members of the opposite sex that are clearly outside the limits set by Islam. These relationships beyond the limits of Islam range from seemingly innocent friendships, to boyfriend-girlfriend relationships, all the way to the complete sexual relationship that has been made right by Allah only for those who are married to each other.

lets go into a hypothetical, say you could only marry once, and you could only talk to the person you marry, And you couldn't talk to them before the marriage, nor could you divorce.
you would have to pick your wife on looks alone.
if you mess up your choice then your now stuck with a woman you dont love for the rest of your life.
then you get another chance, and another. You wouldn't make the same mistakes each time, by wife #4 you have probably come to an arrangement you are happy with so talking before marraige wasn't that important...
but without polygamy you need to know you are going to be compatible, so you need to talk.
can you see how your religious book may have set the rules for starting relationships with polygamy intended. That is how it influences this part about not being friends.

No. It doesn't favor men. It's for the simple fact that is a women has more than one wife and they won't know to which husband does the child belong to. This is besides the fact that it did help back then marry the women whom didn't have husbands. There were more women than men.
Also Islam says that a man can ONLY marry more than one as long as he treats both EXACTLY equally.
