I'm writing a story and I need a way for the characters to travel back in time or what not

i dont want anything cheesy

either they get knocked on the head and dream it or they actually go back but how?

no portals or magic please

what if they read a bit of an old diary and they enjoy it, you could make the person who wrote the diary just like them or have them dream about it later

Get Doctor Who's time machine in it.

Or how about they were swimming in a river, at the end of the river their was an electricty generating dam. They fall down the river and when they get electrified by the electricty of the power of the river they get back in time

Hmm...What about using distance and location? For example, a person wonders so far into the woods, and the woods steadly begins to change to maybe... how woods would look in the Jurrasic period. There is no magic, no portals, just the mystery of the deep woods.

you can also have them fall into a Whirlpool and wash up in the past and when ever they fall asleap return to there life in preasant time as if nuthing hapend, only to return to the past when they wake up. like being stuck in 2 timelines

Ummm, you could have them be reading a book, right? Probably a diary. They then have very vivid scenes in their head on the events, and then find themselves in that time.
