I plan on watching it some time next week ... to finally see what all the hype is ... this and Cowboy Bebop are widely considered, from my own research, to be the best 2 aimes out ...

I find the story good. It has a lot of twists. If you liked Case Closed a.k.a. Detective Conan, because of the way he thinks in solving crimes, a higher chance you'll like this series too.
