    A variable (the letter) is equal to a number. The point of the problem is to solve for what the number is.
    For example:

    2x = 50
    /2 /2
    x = 25

    You basically do the same thing to both sides of the equals sign. The goal is to have the variable you are solving for alone on one side.

    Ill be in pre cal next year. I looked at this seniors Calculas book and it scared me...it had weird characters in it.

    calculus isn't that bad ... calculus 1 is mostly just limits and differentiation...
