It is mostly carbon combined with other chemicals like ash. There is no set chemical equation.

Then how am I supposed to answer this?

When xharcoal is burned in oxygen, a gas is produced. That gas, according to what I found is carbonic acid. (?)

How could I show this as an equaion?

This is very odd, I cannot find a set formula for charcoal. This article talks about the process, scroll down to read about charcoal.

    Maybe this will help.

You have a weird chemistry (?) class!

No reaction ... we did this in chem lab a while back ... but be warned I kinda fell asleep and copied this offa some other kids so don't blame me if it's incorrect information Very Happy

I know that charcoal is basically carbon, so the equations will probably look like C (s) + O2 (g) -> CO2 (g) ... which makes the product carbon dioxide? lol Very Happy Honestly, this is the easiest chem question I have ever seen ..

umm carbonic acid isn't a gas ... and the chemical formula for carbonic acid is H2CO3 ...

And I did a triple post ... nice afro see this is wat happens when u stay up late, now i feel all loopy and disoriented n sleep deprived X ) :x :affraid:

Ooo, I love chemical equations. Especially balancing them.

But as for charcoal, you're not in luck. There are many variables (including what it's made out of).

Also, carbonic acid is a liquid. It'd make sense if the charcoal were 100% carbon, and it were mixed with H2O. Because that (theoretically) makes H2CO3. C H2O > H2CO3. It's not balanced though.

    Yeah, this topic is done.

My teacher just said that charcoal is just carbon. So I said ok, and I am fine with that Smile

    Thanks anyway Very Happy
