America kept the war with Japan going because the Japanese attacked us and our goal was to prevent that from ever happening again, the Japanese did not accept our terms for surrendered even when warned of the catastrophe that was to befall them

If mainland Japan was invaded, it wouldn't just be the soldiers who would fight. The Japanese in general absolutely refused surrender.
